Age Culture and Elderly Care

What is the origin of the Nikodemus Werk and what are the tasks of the association

The Nikodemus Werk was founded in 1977 from out of the anthroposophical movement and the movement for religious renewal, the "The Christian Community". Its members are proactive people and institutions who want to implement and continue to develop the spiritual impulse of anthroposophically extended elderly care.

The association has about 30 members – long-term care facilities, out-patient services and training centres – and sees itself as a forum for:

  • reciprocal consultation and support
  • building and extending relationships and networks for a forward-looking age culture
  • developing contemporary, spiritually extended forms of interaction, work, life and learning
  • quality assurance and development
  • contributing to investigating and answering the great questions of humanity of the present, particularly about the meaning of illness, dying and death and of (old) age.

How is the work in the Nikodemus Werk organised?

In order to do justice to these tasks, specialist conferences and work meetings are held within the Nikodemus Werk for staff from the areas of nursing, housekeeping and administration, and the association endeavours to develop and secure common quality objectives.

The representatives of the member institutions meet twice a year: in spring to discuss organisational issues and with a members' meeting, and in autumn to discuss anthroposophical content together. Regional meetings are also held to discuss specific issues arising in different areas of work.
